This is hard for the man to accept. A truck full of roadagents comes upon the man and the boy, who hide in the woods. The next day, they descend into the city. The boy's dreams continue to be bad, and the man encourages him, saying that his bad dreams mean he hasn't given up.
Bad dreams, on the other hand, are reassuring because they demonstrate that the man and boy are still persevering in the world they inhabit. The man has more color-drenched dreams, and thinks of them as death calling him. They come upon another traveler on the road, an old man who tells them his name is Ely, which is not true.

Nearing death, the man's dreams turned to happy thoughts of his wife. After some time, the man tells the boy that the good guys keep trying, so they have to open the door and find out what's down there. They can't find the man, but leave his clothes in the road.
The man begins to cough more blood. The man and boy decide to leave their camp on the beach, and they pare down their food stores so that the cart is more manageable. The man wears goggles and a cotton mask over his face to protect from the ash everywhere. The boy, though, recovers.
He wants to know if it's blue. Then they set out on the road and pass through an abandoned city. The boy enjoys the drink and their spirits are lifted for a moment.
Later that night, the man and Ely talk about the old world, about death, God, and the future — particularly, about what it would be like to be the last human on the planet. The pistol, though, only has two bullets.
He retrieves it for the boy and lets him drink it.
After that food runs out, and once again starving, they find a bomb shelter full of canned food and supplies. He persuades Terry to move back with her family and he returns to his life in New York alone.
